Biography

Franz Konwitschny was a German conductor. He served as general music director and musical director of the Frankfurt Opera (1938–1945), as Gewandhauskapellmeister in Leipzig (1949–1962), as chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and general music director of the Dresden State Opera (1953–55), and as musical director of the German State Opera in East Berlin (1955–1962). Konwitschny is particularly known for his interpretations of Richard Wagner's operas.
